I Ran Five Gut Protocols At Once For Three Years. I Could Not Read A Single One Of Them.

Every bottle on my shelf might have worked. That was the problem.

Morning kitchen counter, glass of water and a single scoop
The whole method, photographed: one glass, one slot, nothing else new.

It was ten past two in the afternoon and I was standing at the back of a conference room with one hand flat against my stomach, quietly working out whether I could get the top button of my pants open without anyone seeing. Same lunch as every Tuesday, same result. For three years I had treated that feeling as a formula problem — wrong strain, wrong fiber, wrong elimination window. It was not a formula problem: I was running five changes at once and could not read a single one of them. What finally moved was not another protocol but subtraction.

01 / The Shelf

Eleven Bottles, All Of Them Half Full

The cabinet above my sink held eleven bottles. I counted them once, on a Sunday, because counting felt like progress.

Two probiotics, one of them refrigerated, both opened. A digestive enzyme I took with dinner for six weeks. Betaine HCl. A powdered fiber that turned to cement if you did not drink it fast. Two different magnesiums. Collagen. An expensive bitters tincture in a dropper bottle I used maybe nine times.

Every one of them is at least half full. That is the part that bothers me now. I did not stop because they failed. I stopped because something else showed up that looked more promising, and I started that instead — usually without stopping the last one.

A shelf of partly used supplement containers
Not a failure of effort. A failure of measurement.
02 / The Spreadsheet

Anxiety, With Receipts

There was a spreadsheet. Of course there was.

Columns for date, food, sleep, training, and a one-to-five bloat score I invented and could never apply the same way twice. I ran a two-week low-FODMAP window, then cut dairy, then cut gluten, then did both at once because I got impatient. I paid for a test that came back as a wall of bar charts and a PDF recommending four more products.

I stopped adding up what I had spent somewhere past two thousand dollars, which is its own kind of answer.

Anxiety, with receipts. That is the most accurate description of my Sunday nights I can give you.

And here is the part I have not been able to un-see since: every time I added something, I understood my own mornings a little less. More inputs, less clarity. That is the opposite of how everything else in my life works.

03 / The Turn

You Cannot Read Five Experiments At Once

Here is what took me three years to see.

Every single thing on that shelf might have worked. I have no way of knowing. I never gave any one of them a clean window, a fixed slot, or a long enough run to produce a result I could actually read.

If five things change and something improves, you have learned nothing you can repeat. If something gets worse, you have learned nothing you can avoid. That is not an experiment. That is shaking a box.

So I did the least appealing thing available. I stopped all of it for two weeks. That was genuinely uncomfortable and involved one bad conversation with myself around day four.

Then I added back exactly one thing, in the same slot, every single day.

04 / The Method

One Variable, One Slot, Thirty Days

The slot matters as much as the variable does.

Mine is the first ten minutes after I wake up, before food and before coffee. One scoop, nine grams, in about ten ounces of water. Then I wait fifteen to twenty minutes before anything else goes in.

That waiting window is not decoration. It is there so the ingredients land on an empty stomach, and so the conditions are identical every morning.

Identical is the whole trick. Same slot, same dose, same conditions, nothing else new for thirty days. When something changes, you know what changed it. When nothing changes, that is also information — and it cost you one product instead of eleven.

05 / The Variable

Why I Did Not Pick A Probiotic

If you only get one variable, it had better be the one carrying the most weight. So I was careful about this part.

It is not a probiotic, and that was deliberate. Stomach acid runs somewhere around pH 1.5 to 3.5, and unprotected live cultures do not hold up well in that environment. The CFU number printed on the label is counted at the factory, not at your gut. I am not telling you probiotics are worthless. I am telling you they are close to unreadable as a single controlled variable, which made them the wrong choice for what I was doing.

What I use instead is Good Mornin’ from Project AD. One scoop, seven ingredients, every dose printed — no proprietary blend hiding the amounts.

Per one 9g scoop. 24 servings per tub. NET WT 238g / 8.4oz.

The 5,000mg of L-Glutamine is the reason I looked twice. That is a clinical dose rather than a dusting — the amount used in the research, not the amount that lets a brand put the word on a label. Glutamine is a primary fuel source for the cells that line the intestinal wall.

The rest is support with a job. Apple cider vinegar at 1,000mg and lemon juice powder ahead of the first meal of the day. Marshmallow root and slippery elm bark, both traditional demulcents. Glycine at 500mg. Aloe vera concentrate.

Nothing in there is filler, and there is nothing in there I cannot explain to you in one sentence. That is a low bar, and almost nothing on my old shelf cleared it.

06 / The Trade-Offs

What This Is Not

I am not going to oversell this, partly because overselling is exactly how the shelf got built in the first place.

It is not the cheapest thing you can buy. Bulk fiber costs less. So does doing nothing.

It will not fix everything. It does not replace sleep, protein, walking, or the fact that I eat badly when I travel. If your mornings are being wrecked by something structural, a drink is not your answer and a clinician is.

It is a drink you have to actually make. Sixty seconds, before coffee. It goes down easily — I take the Orange Juice, and the apple cider vinegar in it is the whole point without any of the wince of drinking the stuff neat — but it is still one more thing in the morning, and you have to want the routine.

And how much you take should match what you are asking of it. One scoop is the daily foundation. Under real load — a hard training block, travel, a stretch that has raised demand — more is reasonable for a defined run, then you step back down. What does not work is starting big, quitting in week two, and concluding it did nothing.

Project AD built this the way they build everything — the founders were formulating for competitive bodybuilders before “wellness” was an aisle in the store. Their line is: “If a solution doesn’t meaningfully improve function, it doesn’t belong.” That is the standard I hold everything to now, including this.

07 / The Timeline

What To Expect, And When

Every foundation product I ever quit, I quit in month one — because nobody had told me what month one is actually for. So here it is, honestly.

Week 1–2 — Establishing the slot

Mostly undramatic. You are building the habit and holding everything else steady. Some people notice less heaviness after meals in this window. Some notice nothing at all. Both are normal, and neither one is your result yet.

Week 3–4 — First readable signal

If something is going to be readable, this is usually where it shows up. Regularity is often the first thing you can actually observe, because it is the easiest thing to observe. Change nothing else. That restraint is the entire point.

Month 2–3 — Your answer

Sixty to ninety days of one variable in one fixed slot gives you something you have probably never had: a result you can attribute. If it is working, you know precisely what is working. If it is not, you have cleanly ruled one thing out and you can move on without guessing.

Mine showed up in week three. Not fireworks — regularity first, then the two o’clock waistband thing stopped being a daily event. What mattered more than either was that for the first time in three years I knew what had caused it.

10 / Last Thing

I Kept The Shelf

The eleven bottles are still in my cabinet. I keep them there deliberately, the way you keep a bad photograph.

They are not evidence that supplements do not work. They are evidence that I spent three years and a lot of money buying answers I had no way of reading. One thing, one slot, one long enough window — that is the only version of this that ever produced information.

Start with the variable that carries the most weight. Then leave everything else alone long enough to find out.
